METAL 100 – BLACKOUT

METAL 100 – BLACKOUT

The Estonian Academy of Arts’ department of jewelry and blacksmithing celebrates its 100th anniversary with the exhibition BLACKOUT. Although the university and the department have changed names several times in the last hundred years, the fact remains that t metal art has been taught at a high level for a hundred years in a row.

Formats, teaching methods, and priorities have changed over the decades. These works in the exhibition from different eras highlight larger themes that have been dealt with again and again. Body, vessel, knot, mythology – to name a few. In the context of these themes students have been seeking the connections between self and surroundings.

The exhibition highlights the works from the department’s archive of student works. The collection, which was started in the 1940s and has been constantly updated, reflects the characteristics and attitudes of each era. The newest works in the exhibition have been completed this autumn semester.

The exhibition was accompanied by the international symposium on 25-26 of October. The alumni and partners of the depoartment from Estonia and abroad sought answers to the question “how do you get there without knowing where exactly you are going?”.

The exhibition opened on October 25 and remains open until December 1.
